OVERVIEW

There are about 2 million people in the United States who deal with dietary restrictions due to illness, allergies, or intolerances. As someone who has dealt with food restrictions first hand, I know how difficult and inconvenient it can be trying to find a meal at a restaurant.

While there are many food apps, such as delivery apps or order ahead apps, they are not built with dietary restrictions in mind; they are missing the functionality of accessibility to all.

Problem:

People with dietary restrictions have difficulty finding accurate menu information for restaurants quickly and efficiently

Discover: competitive analysis, user surveys

A competitive analysis was conducted with Spokin, AllergyEats, and Find Me Gluten Free. There were a few common issues that users experienced with each app:

  • Users cannot filter restaurants based on allergies

  • Menus have little to no information about allergens on the app

  • Users want to be able to search for the type of food they want

Define: problem, HMW statement, user persona

User insights from surveys

  • 10/15 participants have dietary restrictions

  • 8/10 participants have more than 1 restriction

  • 7/10 participants have restrictions due to medical reasons

  • 6/10 participants have difficulty trying new foods because they're afraid it might not be safe

  • 9/10 participants would like to be able to explore different cuisines

  • 8/10 participants research online or call the restaurant beforehand

The information from the user surveys and the breakdown of the persona aided in developing a how might we statement:

How might we enable users to get the menu information they need for their dietary restrictions quickly and efficiently all in one place?

 Develop: Lo-fi wireframes, hi-fi wireframe v.1

The initial wireframes were built with the goal of organizing cuisines, restaurants, and menus in an simple way. However, after conducting an unmoderated usability test for the mockup:

  • 3 users said was very difficult to read

  • 4 users stated that the buttons didn’t give them the urge to click them

After receiving feedback

  • 4 users said the app was simple to use, but the page looked very busy
